With the onset of winter, Id like to review the procedures we follow to delay or close school.
When there is bad weather, numerous members of the transportation department are driving the roads at 4:00 a.m. to ascertain conditions and our ability to transport students safely. We have been fortunate that the county crews assigned to the township as well as the city public works personnel have done an excellent job of clearing roads, and if we find an area that concerns us, they respond rapidly to try to correct the problem. The most problematic areas are in the western part of the township and most of the area north of SR 32, and what we do will largely be based on conditions in those areas.
The county superintendents discuss the conditions around 5:00 a.m. We compare notes and try to make a determination no later than 5:45 a.m. so families can plan accordingly. However, conditions could be such that a little more time is needed. I do not like to call for a delay and then change to a cancellation, as this causes many problems. Even with this early work, occasionally the weather changes after the decision has been made.
If on any day a parent feels the conditions are unsafe due to the weather, we urge you to use your best judgment. However, please call the school office and work through the principal to plan a course of action for your child(ren).
If snow moves in during the day, we often get calls about early dismissal. Our bus drivers are not full time employees; they drive their morning routes, go home or work another job, and then return later to drive the afternoon routes. In order to get the drivers in for an early dismissal, the decision to release early has to be made by 11:00 a.m. After 11:00 a.m. dismissal will be at the regular time. Also, experience has shown that generally the roads are at their worst when snow first starts falling. Given a little time, the road crews can get the roads in better shape than at the initial falling of snow.
Please remember to notify the school if there is a change to your telephone contact information, as we use Global Connect to alert parents about delays or cancellations.
