The 2017-2018 5th Grade Reading Challenge
The 5th grade has decided to begin a 5th grade reading challenge. This challenge will be completed by Triads in hopes of earning the 5th grade Book Bonanza trophy. The triad with the most books read will win the trophy and a party! We will be keeping track of the amount of books each student reads during the trimester and calculating our triad reading. Any books over 300+ pages will count for two books. The 5th grade reading challenge begins September 5th.
In the Classroom:
Students will be working to set new goals in the amount of books they will read this school year. Students will be required to read 3 books each trimester and receive a grade for this completion After reading a book students will complete a WhooosReading Quiz to show they have read the entire book.
What is WhooosReading?
Whooosreading is a replacement of Accelerated Reader that allows students to present their knowledge over a book in their own words through a 3 question quiz of deeper level questions. We will have our own competition within our triad to see who can earn the most points in Whooosreading. We will be developing the prizes for high number of book readers, high coin earners, and best book reviewer in each class each trimester. Students will be in charge of picking the prizes. We will be giving students their login information so that they can access their WhooosReading account on their own.
How it Works:
- Quizzes are comprised of open-ended questions only. As students type their answers, they will receive in-the-moment feedback on how they can improve their answers.
- After students complete the quiz, they will receive wisdom coins, which they can use to purchase accessories in the Owl Shop for their Owl Avatar.
- Standards-aligned Journal Activities provide additional practice, and opportunities to earn more coins before and after students take a quiz.
- All of the student’s work and progress towards goals is housed in the teacher account where teachers can also access insights and next steps for individual student and group strengths and weaknesses.

When will students have time to complete reading quizzes?
- Students can take quizzes during SRT time, during specific station time, and at home.
Friday Aug. 25th–All NWEA testing and math i-Ready diagnostic testing is concluded. Results will be shared with parents during parent conferences in the coming months.
